one fantastic thing at greenbelt was the city of peace.
it was such a simple idea by sanctuary (who have a track record of brilliant installations at greenbelt over the last few years). they had an empty space at the start of the weekend and lots of scrap cardboard, paints, coloured paper, glue etc… over the weekend people came in and added their constructions/ideas to the city of peace. the transformation was astonishing and all ages took part. this is the result by the end of the weekend (thanks to sonia for sending me the pic).
I have some panorama collage pics of it at http://www.mwild.org/photos/view_album.php?set_albumName=Greenbelt2004 . It was a pretty striking installation, the 100k jpgs I’ve put in the album don’t really do it justice. sHy-Lo deserve a mention too – I have rarely seen the gospel proclaimed so energetically. Great range for a hiphop band.
Ok, can I ask a silly question? As one starting to learn how to creative emergent worship experiences for my students, I keep wondering what do you do with all the prayers and models people make when its all over? I feel bad throwing them away…
good question! i think people were invited to collect their piece of the city of peace at the end of the festival. but it would clearly be impossible to keep it all otherwise…
sadly, the models that weren’t collected were throw away… a shame.
we thought about dressing up in godzilla suits and destroying it that way! humour, eh? sometimes the only way to deal with such sadness!
Destroying it all was really upsetting,it
didn’t feel right. We took loads of photo’s
and copied the comments and polaroids from the the comments board, so we have a good range
of documantation from the event, and some
people collected their things.
