emergent strategy

My dream is a movement with such deep trust that we move as a murmuration the way groups of starlings billow, dive, dance collectively through the air – to avoid predators, and it seems to pass time in the most beautiful way possible

emergent stratgeya book that made quite an impact on me last year or maybe the year before was emergent strategy by adrienne maree brown. i heard it mentioned on a podcast i think. i am interested in movements and an emergent way of operating is my natural instinct so it was always going to be a good fit. it’s about change and newness in complex systems.

the bulk of the book is six elements of emergent strategy. these are creatuve and interesting. for example the first one is fractals – looking at how what we practice at the small scale sets the pattern for the whole system (fractals are self similar across different scales). i have found them so helpful that i or others have presented them to our team, cms international hubs, and our pioneer network and we are trying to adopt those ways of operating. i don’t want to spell out all six elements here – this is meant to be a quick catch up of books rather than reviews but i recommend. if you are of an organisational structured mindset you’ll probably hate it!
