images of christ in photography

this week is holy week (apologies for stating the obvious). one of the things i have been doing to reflect on it is look at two books of photography images that i was given at christmas – representations which depicts images of christ in photography and cross – images of crosses in photography. both are photography/art books rather than books produced by christian publishers. they’ve both been around for a while. there are lots of images that are striking/provocative. one series that has really grabbed me is a series from duane michals in the 80s called christ in new york. i managed to trace them online – see what you think. the one above is christ being beaten defending a homosexual…

christ watches a religious hypocrite on television
christ sees a woman who has died during an illegal abortion
christ eats dog food with an old ukranian lady in brooklyn
christ is beaten defending a homosexual
christ sees a woman being attacked
christ is shot by a mugger with a hand gun

powerful images. putting the Christ in our context is worth way more than a 1000 words.

    hi jonny
you should check out this book Revelation: Representations of Christ in Photography by Nissan N. Perez for an excellent collection of artists portrayals of christ through photography in a whole host of different contexts

    Hi Jonny,
Your images are quite powerful. I am wondering why Christ is active in some, and witnessing(more passive)in another.
    Thanks,
    Joanne
