if you’ve not read hirsch and frost’s book ignore this post but i liked ben’s thought that communitas = unsustainable mission or it might. i like the concept of communitas but ben’s right in that it must be for a season rather than a permanant state…

But what is permanent? Do we see communitas as leading to re-integration into the present structures or to socialize us into the Kingdom, in which permanence is eternity, and thus communitas now has an eschatological dimension.
If the latter then this whole present moment is liminal. The NT seems to suggest our ‘home’, for which we are being readied, is not of this present world. We are Kingdom people, and the Kingdom is not of this world, even though it’s already among us. So we can’t integrate into anything of this world and are kept in a permanent tension, bonding in our alien status as we await our full integration into God’s glory.
