blogs come to me!

my latest discovery with typepad (that i couldn’t do with the free blog i had with blogger) is the ability to get blogs to come to me rather than me go to them… i had heard people talk about this and it was a complete mystery. but daniel stayed a few nights last week and i got to see his news aggregator in action and was very impressed. this week i bought a mac magazine which i do occassionally and it had a free news aggregator (NetNewsWire Lite) which i have just tried out. and yes it’s amazing!!!! all i do is right/control click on a blog’s XML or RSS or ‘syndicate this site’ button and add that address in the programme and i am subscribed to it. whenever i open the programme it will update all the blog entries. so what? well… i think it means several things :-

i don’t have to keep checking to see if people have posted – i’ll find out whenever i open up the programme

if i haven’t got an XML or RSS feed i am going to be out of the loop as this technology becomes more prevalent

i am happy that i’ve changed to typepad as people can add me to their news aggregator if they so desire. i think that blogger pro probably has the same option though i don’t know as i never went pro

i have bookmarked lots of blogs that i’ll check but if you are syndicated i know already that i’ll be checking those more regularly – it will be impossible not to

if what i’m talking about is gobbledygook, it was to me until someone showed me a news aggreegator programme in action, so the best way to get your head round it is to do the same….

if you want to know what mac magazine the programme was with it is ‘macworld plus – mac genius’

I had a play with NetNewsWire Lite too but settled for using FeedMe instead. It just sits in the Mac OS X dock and provides a pop-up menu of headlines from the blogs I’ve specified. Select a headline and it opens in your browser. Found it at one of the standard download sites.

FeedMe looks interesting for a small number of subscriptions, but I keep up with over twenty blogs that use RSS. NewNewsWire Lite serves me well.
