a friend invited me to the premiere of planet israel, a documentary film by british/american jew, gillian mosely. she was interviewed after the screening which was really brilliant. i have seen quite a lot of coverage of gaza both in terms of stats and footage which is so harrowing. the initial hamas attack of course is also harrowing but the disproportionate brutality is horrendous. this film does look into that but what is unique is that this is a film made by a jew who goes to israel to talk to other jews about what is going on. she wanted to know what has happened to make any jews, a people who have experienced oppression, othering, and genocide, exhibit such moral and humanitarian numbness. i suspect it won’y be in loads of cinemas but if it is do go and support it. or if you have an independent cinema near you encourage them to show it. documentary films are so important when it comes to truth telling especially now when so many news outlets don’t seem to welcome that any more.
