we were stood on the beach watching starlings over scarborough town at the weekend. my biologist friend said that mathematicians have tried to analyse starling flock patterns but it’s beyond our understanding of patterns and flock mentality.

starlings are just stunning to watch, aren’t they?
adrian… scientists are beginning to get the hang of it. apparently, partly it’s to do with nesting and seeing who’ll be first to break from the flock (a dangerous business daring to separate when you’d make a tasty lunch for other birds). also, there seems to be a ritual going on, sorting out the alpha birds who will then get themselves the highest and best spots in the trees. the biggest flocks are on the somerset levels, just down the road from us. i see them on the local news every year and think i must go and see them, but i still haven’t… i really must.
