latest emergingchurch.info issue

emergingchurch.info has had an update since i last looked – the june issue.

in it pete rollins gets interviewed, indeed pinned down at points by ian mobsby. his new book the fidelity of betrayal is out. i had a read of an advance copy that becky passed on to me. the basic idea is that sometimes following christ calls for a betrayal of what we have known as faith – a good example is in acts 10-15 when peter has the vision to kill and eat forbidden meat which leads to him going to a gentile household. it’s a great theme though i suspect those moments are pretty rare rather than normative. i’m far from convinced by pete’s take on judas that he spends a lot of time on in the book. pete’s blog has an interesting conversation going on in the comments around religionless christianity which questions to what degree a deconstructionist agenda is good as a whole diet as opposed to in small medicinal doses.

there is also a piece on mission shaped church for older people and a wilderness meditation/arts project

    Hey Jonny
My fear is that people will think that I have a take on Judas in the book! I really don’t. I use him purely as a literary tool. Having said that I think that one can detect two Judas narratives in the NT which lead to a certain tension (basically between Mark and John). However, I do not want to base my thoughts on that at all. My main point about Judas is simply used as a thought experiment – getting people to think, “if Judas knew what would transpire by the kiss would the kiss become an act of tragic love”.
    Hope you are keeping well
