so much good music…

there is so much good music out at the moment. to name a few…

good times 6 – norman jay
the usual eclectic blend of classic good times tunes

cafe solo – jose padilla
jose put together the first three cafe del mar albums and this is him back to wonderful form. i have listened to this loads – ballearic chilled tunes.

flight 602 – AIM
hard to categorise – snatches of hip hop, jazzy feel in places, but overall pretty mellow and chilled. i love most of the stuff these guys do.

the outsider – DJ shadow
dj shadow is back. looking forward to seeing him in december. i need to listen to this more but it hasn’t grabbed me in the way endtroducing did. but still some good tunes in there though some that i skip.

big chill classics – mr scruff
mr scruff is collecting sub cultural capital here by selecting some of the most obscure tunes ever. spanning about 4 decades includes jazz, reggae, chill

finger lickin export 02 – a skillz
hip hop cd for a party. reminds me of sitting in the sun at the big chill this summer at fat tuesdays tent while he played.

late night tales – air
a trip down memory lane for me in some ways with the likes of all cats are grey by the cure and ghosts by japan but a good selection for late night by the dons of chill

the trip vol 2 – tom middleton
not heard it yet. doubtless a fine selection.

contact note – jon hopkins
this came out in 2004 but is one of my current faves – electronica moody, ambient

trentemøller – the last resort
i feel like i have made a few new discoveries in music but this cd is probably the one that surprised me the most. joel bought it (he keeps introuducing me to new music now) and i can’t stop playing it. again it’s electronica but with very dubby deep bass and moody as can be.

Bonobo
days to come – bonobo
last night we went to see bonobo live. i caught them at the big chill in 2005 and have been looking out to see when they were playing in london since. the new cd is wonderful. there are more songs on this album than previous offerings though still plenty of instrumental tracks. sadly live the vocalist wasn’t the one on the cd, though fink making a guest appearance was a treat.

what are you listening to?

currently listening to the superb ‘bright carvings’ by ‘Monkey swallows the universe’. http://www.mstu.co.uk
Their blend of folky indie tweeness has produced my favourite album of the year.
also just bought the Feist album, let it die, it’s been out a while and also gets a double thumbs up.

Can’t wait to hear the “trip 2” too!
Listening to “mocking bird” by Derek Webb…
Loads of netlabel stuff from Sutemos and Earth Monkey Productions…
and loads of old King Britt stuff (thanks btw for switching me on to Sister Gertrude – fab)
    Peace

Moog… Fiest is even better live. Saw her last year in King Tut’s and she was amazing. Check her live set!

    catchy, melodic, queen-esque…

Strangely a very similar list to your own. The power of the coconut!
Intrigued by trentemøller I’ll have to check it out.
Bonobo and Aim on the pod today, trying to educate some Bostonians.
I really like the Hot Chip album too.
Also been getting nostalgic – something to do with age I guess – and listening to The Triffids, some Magazine and some old Talking Heads.

am in love with the new deftones album available for listening only on myspace, not for the faint hearted but beautifully fisceral
and while in an american mood have been basking in the original emo
    fugazi
    bluetip
    sunny day real eastate
    embrace (the nyc one)

A totally different genre of music to you by the sounds of things.
I am more into guitar based rock. I emerge in a leather jacket 😀

    recently released:
the radio dept. – pet sounds. great melancholic pop anthems with an 80s-sound (i think)
woven hand – mosaic. not his/their best, but still really good gothcountry, doomday americana
the roots – game theory. hip-hop.
cut chemist – the audience is listening. turntablism..
beirut – gulag orkestar. indiebalkanpop, and
thom yorke – the eraser. still grows..

    Love Feist and Monkey Swallows,
Like you Jonny I was a bit non-plussed by the new Shadow stuff. Seems he wants to get “back to hip-hop” but a lot of it sounds like second rate krunk. The Cut-Chemist Album “The Audience is Listening,” on the other hand is shadow-like hip-hop at it’s best; bouncy, eclectic, ace.
Also loving the new Squarepusher album “Hello Everything” just a frenetic on the bass and beats front, but a bit more…happy than recent albums.
Final new discovery for me is Joanna Newsom, she’s a folky harpist from the states with a voice somewhere between Bjork and Kate Bush. Strange and beguiling.
The a-skillz and tom middleton mixes sound cool, will have to try and find them.

    Jonny,
Have you listened to DJ Krush from Japan? i found him accidentally and love his stuff. When i was in LA in September he happened to be there and i caught his how.
