often when i am teaching on the church needing to respond to new cultural situations but seeming to be stuck in a bygone era as an illustration i use an advert for playstation called flea circus. i’ve had it on a btaa dvd for a few years. i showed it recently at a ReSource weekend and laura who was there managed to track it down online.
when i first saw it my immediate thought was ‘that’s church!’…
a few other people have asked where i got it so i thought it worth sharing the link

Superb!
I’ll definitely be finding a way to crobar that into my next talk 😉
This is a fabulous image of the “boxiness” we impose upon ourselves in the name of spirituality. As you said, all too often “that’s church.” Thanks for sharing it!

An excellent analogy, I’ve updated my adverts page with links to the film and to ReSource. Perhaps we are all fleas performing to the whims of an overseeing Ring Master?
Glad to be of service… I used it last night at Sanctus1 to explore and explain my feelings of discomfort and contradiction because of being a po-mo, emerging, urban 20-something woman and also wanting to be part of the insitution of The Church.
I also used the Chuck Kraft/ Rob Warner quotes about recognising the minority that will conform culturally in order to be Christian are God’s people, but yearning for those who will not conform in order to come to faith and be part of The Church. That feels uncomfortable to me too. And it seemed to strike a note with a few Sanctonians… wonder why? 😉
Great clip. What year is that from? I am going to order it from BTAA?
Thanks
