daniel blogs that he gets irritated when you force links to open in a new window. i do this all the time so apologies daniel! but before i change my habits what does anyone else think/want?

on the subject of blog tech stuff why don’t all you typepad users select to send the whole of your posts to your rss feeds? some do one line, some do 30 words, but come on send all your post….

when links take me to an another site, i prefer them to open in a new window. but then you can always right-click and open a link in a new window. i don’t know of a way to reverse the process, i.e. open a link that is coded for a new window in the same window.

    Jonny,
That’s pretty funny, because I like just getting a headline on the rss feed. I like see what’s new and then going to the actual blog to read the whole post.
As far as opening in a new window. I prefer that. I like to just click back on the original page, or close the window to get back. I hate having to hit the back button multiple times. Heck, sometimes, I right click and hit open in a new window just for that sake.

I vote for opening a new window

if you’ve got a decent feedreader, all it takes is a doubleclick to get the whole post anyway, even if it is coded to send the first couple of lines… I’m using Sharpreader, which is fantastic.
as for new window links, I use them on my site, mainly cos I often go round opening up a whole load of windows as I search for stuff then come back and do my research…

I am SO glad that so many people agree — links should open in a NEW window! Amen. Preach it. I saw Dean at HealYourChurchWebsite.com was advising against doing this because it takes the control out of the hands of the user — but obviously 9 out of 10 users agree, opening in a new window is better. Shazzam!

Just to be difficult. In the same window if it’s a link to another part of your own site/blog. In another window if it is an external site. And never embed someone elses web page inside yours using an frame (inline or other). I also like the short excerpt approach on RSS feeds – saves screen space (or web page space if you’re aggregating content on a page) and bandwidth. (BTW does typepage or blogs.com have a traffic restriction on RSS feeds?).

ok…. for the time being it will still be in a new window. tabbed browsing is cool and i take daniel’s point but clearly not many people use it still! cheers

Me too; new window enables me to keep the thread of what you say and to go back to what looks interesting later. I use opera and so it just gets a nice little booktab.

Open in new window – and actually jonny I may be responsible for your choosing this option in the first place since I remember some time ago suggesting that you use the blank target command since I don’t like being taken away from the host page that I’m looking at. New window every time for me – and as for ‘taking control out of the hands of the user’ I can’t see how since you either want to go to the link or you don’t – the constant use of the back button can be a pain blah blah blah . . . . .

ahhh yes – it was you hadge that helped me create this habit!

Don’t know much, but I prefer a new window, too.

I just switched my links today to open in a new window, so I’m in favor of it… If I want to browse links from someone’s page, I don’t want to lose the original page… I guess I’m not a huge fan of the back button.
