that’s mission

we seek to renew the face of the earth, all things and all peoples – that’s mission

this was one of archbishop rowan williams lines in his talk on friday at cms. that’s as good a definition of mission as i have heard.

Cheers Jonny, I wonder if another way to say this – one which puts more emphasis on God “doing” (i.e. missio Dei)rather than our doing – might be:
We collaboratively join in with God in God’s project to renew the face of the earth, all things and all peoples = mission.
A bit picky I guess, but I’m so often confronted by the all to easy way that “I” want to “do”, rather than the slower more difficult work of discerning what God is going and wanting to do… mission to easily becomes “my” project…
Great picture of Rowan by the way…

yes… like it. it was accompanied by a lot of mphasis on us getting out of the way, seeing what god is doing and joining in and so had much more of the emphasis you describe.

Did you take the photo of him – it really captures one of his “looks” brilliantly – I think it accompanies the moment when he makes an ‘aside’ or ‘off the cuff’ remark while thinking what he is saying

yes i really like the photo too (and did take it) – i agree – it really is him if you know what i mean – quizzical, wise, thoughtful, kind, gentle… i edited the background a bit and made it all a bit darker as he seems to go well against a dark background.
