free range

had a greenbelt planning meeting yesterday which was near liverpool street so popped in to truman brewery off brick lane to see the free range first week of shows. it was really inspiring. goldsmiths show and catalogue was stunningly presented. the students work was great quality but it was also exploring wonderful themes – how to live in a consumer culture, how we see the world and find our place in it, the environment, family, relationships, the place of technology in our lives. i found a lot of it really thoughtful and hopeful (though the cynical part of me suspects that half of these students with their questions about consumer culture will end up using their creativity working for advertising agencies).

the greenwich university show also had some great stuff in it. i snapped a few pics. particularly striking was a fridge full of barbie doll parts packaged as meat. i also liked the mannequins in the window wrapped in sale tape.
