raw materials and scrapheap services

Hearnaumanhad a day out in london today with the family. visited the tate modern for the first time in a while. the bruce nauman piece filling the huge turbine hall is really good.

speakers line the walls creating bands of sound as you walk down. the overall effect is to create a sort of collage of sound. voices range from saying thank you thank you to get out of my mind. it’s a picture of life – so much noise, so many voices. it’s also interesting how sound can define a space so well…

ScrapheapScrapheap2i was also delighted to see that michael landy’s exhibition scrapheap services is on for a few months. i’ve a had a little booklet about this for a while so it was good to finally see it. to create a perfect world scrap heap services rids the world of unwanted people. lots of cutouts of people are put through this shredder called the vulture and end up in a heap on the floor. it’s wonderfully done. the unwanted people are scattered on the floor. as people have walked through the tate they have stuck to their feet and ended up in other rooms. we rescued two such people from the scrap heap and brought them home…

i have added the picture to the art pics album

Michael Landy’s piece is genius, he made a few such pieces, one of which we used as a focus for a service we had here a while back. Also well worth checking out his house installation in Tate Britain.

my wife and i enjoyed (that’s not the right word) lingering in the scrapheap room for quite a while in late August. such a powerful piece. same day we’d run into Andrew Jones in the gift shop a few floors down.

I went there last week, and Scrapheap Services was one of my favourite works. I actually took one of the paper figures from off the floor!
